The history of the participation of the national team of Costa Rica in the world championships
The Costa Rican team doesn’t have that much experience of participating in the World Championships. Often she did not qualify or did not participate for other reasons. However, the next World Cup will be the third in a row that the Costa Ricans have taken part in. Costa Rica showed the best result in Brazil in 2014, reaching the quarter-finals. Let’s remember how it was.
Costa Rica was placed in Group D. In the first match, the Costa Ricans defeated Uruguay 3-1. The winners were Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marcos Ureña. After that, the national team of Costa Rica beat Italy with a minimum score thanks to a goal by Brian Ruiz. In the final match, there was a goalless draw with England. Costa Rica finished first in the group with seven points. In the 1/8 finals, the Costa Ricans met Greece. The main time of the game ended in a 1-1 draw, the goal was scored by Brian Ruiz. On penalties, the Costa Ricans won 5:3. In the 1/4 final there was a match with the Dutch national team. Regular time ended in a 0:0 draw. On penalties, Costa Rica lost 3-4.
How Costa Rica qualified for the 2022 World Cup
The national team of Costa Rica has started qualifying for the world championship in the CONCACAF zone. Costa Rica entered the top five teams in North America, which begin selection immediately from the third round. This stage is a group of eight teams. The national team of Costa Rica in the first round tied with Panama (0:0), lost to Mexico (0:1), then tied with Jamaica (1:1), Honduras (0:0 ), beat El Salvador (2:1), lost to USA (1:2) and Canada (0:1). In the second round, the Costa Ricans beat Honduras (2:1), Panama (1:0), tied with Mexico (0:0), Jamaica (1:0), Canada (1:0) , El Salvador (2:1) and United States (2:0). Costa Rica scored 25 points and finished fourth in the group. This result meant an exit in intercontinental matches. There, the Costa Rican team met the New Zealand team. The Costa Ricans won with a score of 1-0 and secured a ticket to the World Cup.
The main stars of the Costa Rica team
Most of the current Costa Rica national team players are in their continent. And against the backdrop of all the others, goalkeeper Keylor Navas stands out. He plays at PSG. Keylor Navas made 21 appearances last season. At the same time, recently Gianluigi Donnarumma took place more often at the gates of PSG.
Costa Rica Head Coach
At the moment, the team is led by Colombian specialist Luis Suarez. Most often, he worked at club level. It was only in 2011-2014 that he led the national team of Honduras. Suarez didn’t have any serious achievements. The next World Cup could therefore be a good opportunity to make a name for yourself.
Prospects for the Costa Rica squad at the 2022 World Cup
The Costa Rica team was in a very difficult group. Its rivals will be Germany, Spain and Japan. The Costa Ricans have very little chance of getting out of the group. Therefore, most likely, we will not see a repeat of the 2014 World Cup success.
