Former midfielder “Krasnodar” and Uzbekistan national team Odil Akhmedov told Sport24 that he decided to end his sporting career at the age of 33 due to the death of his father.
Akhmedov announced his retirement from football in December 2021.
– After Shanghai, you played for Cangzhou – this is the last club of your career. Why did you end your career at just 33?
– I had options with two or three teams from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. But I haven’t watched any. He immediately refused and decided to end his career – due to the death of his father.
– What happened to him?
– In 2020 a pandemic started, dad got sick with coronavirus. And, unfortunately, did not survive it. After that, the desire and motivation to play football disappeared. I started spending more time with my family. For eleven long years I was a legionnaire. For this reason, he rarely visited Uzbekistan.
Do you see yourself becoming a coach in the future?
– Not yet. It is hard work, where strong nerves are needed. Maybe after a while I will think about it,” Akhmedov said.
The Uzbek footballer played for Krasnodar from 2014 to 2016. Akhmetov also played for Pakhtakor, Anji, Chinese Shanghai SIPG and Tianjin Teda.
Akhmedov has 108 appearances in the Uzbekistan national team and has scored 21 goals.
