The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the creation of the Women’s Nations League, the final phase of which will qualify for the Olympic tournament, reports the organization’s press service.
UEFA released a new system for women’s tournaments on Thursday. The new format will be used for the first time ahead of the 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championship, and similar principles will apply for the 2027 World Cup.
As in the Men’s Nations Football League, the four group winners of the strongest division will advance to the final phase of the tournament. In 2024, following the results of the semi-final matches, two teams will be determined which, together with France, will participate in the Olympic tournament. If France qualifies for the final, the third-placed team will qualify for the Olympics.
European qualification will begin in spring 2024, after the completion of the Nations League, and consists of two stages. The first stage takes place according to the same format as the League of Nations.
The ultimate goal of this stage of the competition for the team is to qualify for the European Championship or World Championship and place as high as possible in the league system in the next cycle. Depending on the place in the group, teams will remain in their division or be automatically promoted to a higher or lower league.
The top eight League A teams based on European qualification results will receive direct tickets to UEFA EURO 2025. The remaining places will be decided in the European qualification knock-out rounds.
The first men’s Nations League draw took place in the 2018/19 season.
