De Zerbi: Our Shakhtar could reach the Champions League quarter-finals if not for the war

Italian specialist notes the huge potential of the Pitmen

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi believes that Miner had the potential to reach the quarter-finals Champions Leaguewhen the Italian coached the Pitmen. The main obstacle for the team was the war unleashed by Russia.

“In those days I only had an obsession to help my Brazilian players. You think that war is far from here, impossible, but when you have been inside, you understand that this is not so.

“I regret the war, I regret the Ukrainian people, I regret my experience with these players. We would be a fantastic team. The potential was endless. We could have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.”

De Zerby headed Shakhtar from May 2021 to June 2022. The team under his leadership took first place in the championship of Ukraine, but dropped out of European competition after the group stage of the Champions League.

In September, the Italian took charge of Brighton. De Zerbi is trying to bring some Shakhtar players to his new team. The main goal of the Italian is defender Nikolai Matvienko.
