Lucescu: I wanted to leave after the Benfica game

Mentor of Kiev hopes that Ukraine will soon be able to return to normal life

Main coach Dynamo Mircea Lucescu said that he was ready to leave the team after losing to Benfica in the playoffs of qualification Champions League.

“In all matches, we played the same way, the problem was in our players, it took 7-8 hours, only transfers after transfers. It was very difficult in terms of adaptation.”

“We had a lot of conversations, but after the Benfica game, to be honest, I wanted to leave. It is not easy for me at my age to travel 10 hours by bus. I used to fight for titles, and I got into a situation where I could not control what was happening here. But I stayed, I thought it was not normal, especially considering what these people are going through.”

“We hope that we will return, that at some point everything will stop in order to get rid of this barbarity, to return to normal life. I will never understand what makes people support this war. So it was in 2014, when I went to Kyiv and played matches with Shakhtar after the occupation of Donetsk. Then I was on a plane, now I’m on a bus.”

Dynamo were relegated to the Europa League after losing to Benfica. In the group round of the LE, Lucescu’s wards took the last place and will no longer play in European competition this season.

In the championship of Ukraine, the people of Kiev, after three victories in a row, climbed to fifth place. In the next match, Dynamo will play with Kolos on November 13. The meeting will be judged by a team of referees headed by Igor Paskhal from Kherson.
