Gianni Infantino wants to use the Mundial to temporarily stop the fire between Ukraine and Russia.
The President of FIFA supports the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. According to Reuters, Gianni Infantino said this during a lunch with representatives of the G20 (G20).
“I suggest to everyone to think about a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia for a month during the World Cup. Or at least implement humanitarian corridors that could lead to the continuation of dialogue as a first step towards peace.
You are world leaders, you have the ability to influence the course of history. Football and the World Cup offer you a unique platform for unity and peace across the planet,” said Infantino.
It should be noted that the Ukrainian side refused any freezing of the conflict, as it would allow the Kremlin troops to gain additional status in the occupied territories.
At the same time, Infantino himself is a long-time friend of the head of the Kremlin, Putin. The President of FIFA repeatedly visited Moscow and received awards from the hands of the journalist.
The Italian-led organization was one of the last to impose sanctions on Russian athletes and only did so under intense pressure from fans around the world.
Infantino also refused to call Russia’s invasion a war, calling the genocide of Ukrainians a “conflict.” Where he was previously criticized by the ex-coach of the Ukrainian national team, Andriy Shevchenko.
