Former footballer of “Rostov” and “Sochi” Ivan Novoseltsev assessed the possible transition of the Russian Football Union (RFU) from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The RFU’s communication service said on Tuesday that the postponement of the vote on the transfer of Russian football from UEFA to the AFC is due to the need for further consultations. Voting is scheduled to take place until December 31, 2022.
– If we have an alternative opportunity, and if we consider the fact that we may not be in Europe for five years, then Asia is a perfectly normal alternative. After all, we have to somehow test our strength, compete and build the future. If they take us to Asia, will they then want to send us back to Europe? Controversial time. I think our leaders should make a decision here, they should analyze the situation and make a forecast. You must choose the lesser of two evils.
Ours versus not ours is the basis of interest in the sport? Yes, it’s true. Naturally, it’s always more interesting to play against foreign teams. It’s normal, but if you wait five years, you have to develop Russian football. But there is a big “but” – children’s coaches. They have low salaries. A qualified trainer knows his own worth and will not train children for that money. It is necessary to train qualified specialists and create conditions for them to develop children’s football. I have been there myself and I know that there are very big problems. Until we have a normal structure for children’s football, everything will be the same, even if we stay at UEFA,” Novoseltsev said on .
Earlier, RFU President Alexander Dyukov said the organization has until December 31 to apply for AFC membership, so the Russian team can participate in the 2026 World Cup qualifier.
At the end of February, UEFA and the International Football Federation (FIFA) suspended Russian teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine.
