Russian Football Union (RFS ) can attract additional investment and new sponsors to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), believes Sherzod Igamberdiev, head of the international department of the Uzbek Football Association.
At the end of February, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) banned Russian clubs and teams from taking part in international matches. The RFU executive committee before the end of the year will vote on the switch from UEFA to the AFC.
– If we take the selection for the World Cup, then the Russian team is not a competitor of Asian countries, because FIFA has increased the quota for Asia. Now 8 teams are going to the World Cup. Four Asian teams regularly qualify: Japan, Korea, Iran and Australia, and there are four more places. Russia takes a quota for itself, but this quota does not hinder or encroach on the leaders of Asian football in any way.
Russia’s possible transition to the AFC can be compared to Australia’s transition. It is also a serious rival for the Asian teams, however, the members of the organization accepted the transition, because it is fresh air, something new. In addition, Russia is a country that recently hosted the World Cup, it is a specialist with extensive experience, it has additional investments and sponsors,” Igamberdiev told .
