Pele, the greatest player in football history, dies

After a brave fight against cancer, Pelé died at the age of 82, leaving behind six children and his wife; Rei had a great role in world football

Due to the health problem, Pelé attended the hospital once a month. The last trip to the site, on November 29, was more delicate. Without responding to the chemotherapy, the King of Football now has only palliative care, with the aim of avoiding pain. In addition, he needed to treat a respiratory infection. The cause of death was multiple organ failure.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, is considered the greatest player in the history of football for all his trajectory, dribbling, goals and for his legacy left for the sport. The Minas Gerais native from Três Corações started playing football at the age of 15, in saints. Pelé’s career exploded very quickly and, at the age of 16, he was already called up for the Brazilian national team, winning his first title with hopscotch, at 17.

Born on October 23, 1940, the “King” was very important in the history of Peixe. Taking the club to the attention of the whole world, Pelé lived his moments of greatest glory in the years 1962 and 1963. With a very strong team, the Vila team won the main tournaments in Brazil and the world.

He was twice champion of Libertadores and Club World Cup. Before, he had debuted in 1956, against Corinthians, from Santo André. Two years later, he was called up for the 1958 World Cup and won his first title with Brazil. With Peixe, Pelé won the Campeonato Paulista on 10 occasions and was Brazilian champion six times.

Player numbers are impressive. In all, there were 1365 games and 1282 goals scored. The greatest idol in the history of Santos fans left a very strong legacy in the sport. Great players have already expressed the importance that the “King” left for the sport. Pepe, his Santos partner, claims that he is the club’s top scorer, as he considers Pelé to be an extraterrestrial.

In the Brazilian National Team, the trajectory was no less glorious. Three-time world champion, Pelé played in four World Cups and won three. In 1958, aged 17, he played his first World Cup match against the USSR. This was the striker’s first appearance for the world. In the 1962 World Cup, he was injured in the second game and was unable to play for the remainder of the competition.

Even so, he became two-time world champion. In the following World Cup, the performance of the entire team was not satisfactory, and Brazil ended up eliminated in the group stage. In 1970, Pelé had his best moment with the green and yellow shirt. He commanded the team on the field, even though he was threatened by Zagallo to stay on the bench.

The following year, he played his farewell match at Maracanã in front of more than 138,000 people. In 1974, he played his last match with Santos. The opponent was Ponte Preta. Two years later, Pelé was signed by the New York Cosmos. He won the American title in 1977 and officially ended his career in a match between the two clubs he played for during his lifetime.

Outside the fields, Pelé participated in several films and soap operas. He recorded two songs with Elis Regina and made several appearances in advertisements. He was investigated by the Military Dictatorship, in 1970, for a possible “sympathy” with the political left. For his conservative views, he was heavily criticized during his lifetime.

In addition, the star faced many questions for not defending the causes that belonged to him. Already in the year 2021, the King underwent surgery after discovering colon cancer. After long months in the battle against the disease, the Brazilian idol left us at the age of 81. Pelé is survived by his wife, Márcia Aoki, with whom he has been married since 2016, and six children: Edinho, Kelly, Flávia, Joshua, Celeste and Jennifer.
