Abascal explained why he agreed to become Spartak’s head coach

Head Coach “Spartacus” Guillermo Abascal explained why he decided to lead the Moscow club and also assessed the team’s results in the first part of the WORLD RPL season.

The Spanish specialist took over at Spartak in June 2022, signing a two-year contract with the Red-Whites.

– I think football should be fun and associated with a local club in the town where you live. I don’t mix it with politics. It seemed to me that it was time to develop this project. I remember that Spartak beating Sevilla 5-1 and the team that achieved results at European level. From the outside I saw it that way, but inside I saw great potential and how great it is in Russia. The man who was the sporting director, Luca Cattani, was also a big influence on me. He gave me the freedom to work on the development of the project. I’m happy with the decision I made.

All coaches have problems. Spartak finished last season in tenth place in the RPL. The team volunteered to challenge for the title with little to no line-up change. I’m not surprised by Spartak’s results, because we have hard-working players with a very good football education, who respect their club and their fans a lot. This allowed us to obtain results. For me, the atmosphere we have created is basic, thanks to which people get used to my requirements more quickly. I don’t just believe in the work of a coach, I believe in my staff, in daily communication, and thanks to this combination, everything happens quickly. Now expectations are rising, but that’s normal,” quotes Relevo Abascal.

After 17 rounds of the WORLD RPL, Spartak, led by Abaskal, 33, takes second place in the standings, 6 points behind Zenit in the lead.
