Lepsaya – about the transfer of RFU to Asia: “We are sure that FIFA will not give players the opportunity to unilaterally terminate contracts with Russian clubs?”

Famous sports director Timur Lepsaya, in a conversation with , suggested that FIFA may allow football players to terminate contracts with Russian clubs in the event of a transfer. RFS of UEFA at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The RFU’s communication service said on Tuesday that the postponement of the vote on the transfer of Russian football from UEFA to the AFC is due to the need for further consultations. Voting is scheduled to take place until December 31, 2022.

– I have a rhetorical question, which is only based on the experience of the world. Of course, it is more interesting for any footballer to compete with the best European teams, and not with those that are not in the top 100 of the FIFA rankings.

It seems to me that it will be much easier for the same Arsen Zakharyan to move to a European club as a player of the club and the national team representing UEFA. Yes, of course there are exceptions, but there are no massive transfers from Asian clubs to top European clubs.

Another moment. If we move to Asia, pass the qualifications for the 2026 World Cup final, will they easily let us into (North) America? There is no certainty. In addition to the fact that there will be European teams who refuse to play with us, the hosts of the World Cup are the United States and Canada (several matches of the 2026 World Cup will be held in Mexico – approx. ). He is one of the most active lobbyists for all kinds of sanctions against Russia. They simply cannot give visas to the Russian team, as was the case before in other regions, Lepsaya told .

– In Asia, we will have to play more often with clubs and teams that are significantly lower in class than the leaders in their region. And is there any sense in such matches with conditional Tajikistan and Uzbekistan?

– Matches with them showed that even the Russian national team cannot cover them with hats.

– But these were friendly matches, where the mood of our players was certainly not one hundred percent.

– Are we sure that there will be a lot of motivation for the match against the national teams of Laos or Cambodia?

– But the status is completely different – a friendly match or a World Cup qualifying match.

– Accept.

I have another thought. I hope the RFU leadership has analyzed this. And what will happen to the contracts of players who have been signed with clubs belonging to UEFA and who have become clubs of another confederation without asking the opinion of the players themselves? I think there might be a conflict here too.

Classically, an Argentinian, a Brazilian or a Russian has signed a contract with Zenit, Spartak and CSKA with a desire to play in the Champions League or the Europa League. And in the event of a move to Asia, he will never have such an opportunity again. And that goes against the spirit of the signed contract. Are we sure that FIFA will not give the possibility to revise these contracts and terminate them unilaterally? I have no such confidence.

“Again, revenue in Asia for clubs and national teams will be different.

— It is difficult to comment. I think UEFA’s move to Asia is exactly against the clubs’ interests. For the sake of a fleeting opportunity to compete in the World Cup, we change confederations. I have no confidence that we will be admitted there. But returning to UEFA will certainly be difficult for many years, as many who do not want to play with Russia will not accept it.

Precisely the history of the departure will not be temporary. I doubt we will be allowed to return to UEFA.

– How will the story end?

— Some kind of spark of hope ignited when they announced today a pause in decision-making until December 31. I hope that once again the RFU will weigh everything and not rush, in my opinion, with the wisest decision.

It would be nice if the 2026 World Cup was held in a friendly country, we could still count on a positive result, but here America…

Earlier, RFU President Alexander Dyukov said the organization has until December 31 to apply for AFC membership, so the Russian team can participate in the 2026 World Cup qualifier.

At the end of February, UEFA and the International Football Federation (FIFA) suspended Russian teams and clubs from participating in international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine.
