Now it’s just “Washington Football Team”.
The National Football League (NFL) club Washington Redskins, due to public pressure, announced a name change, removing the word Redskins.
Now the franchise is simply called “Washington Football Team”, but soon the name will be replenished with another word, which will be determined later. The emblem, which currently depicts an Indian, will also change.
The management had to urgently consider this issue because of its relevance in modern realities. Activists considered the name Redskins to be discriminatory against the indigenous peoples of North America.
Prior to this, US President Donald Trump said that teams should not change their historical names. The Cleveland Indians baseball club also came under pressure from activists.
The Redskins have been the historical name of the Washington team since 1933, when the franchise still represented Boston. Literally translated, it means “redskins”.
The team has won five NFL championships in its history. Washington failed to make the playoffs last season.
