Colombia is the first Latin American country to respond to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s proposal to name a stadium after Pele in all countries of the world.
The governor of the southern department of Colombia, Meta Juan Guillermo Zuluaga, announced via social networks that the stadium in the city of Villavicencio will bear the name of the former leader of the Brazilian national team.
Opened in 1958, the 15,000-seat stadium was once simply known as Bello Horizonte, which means “beautiful horizon” in Spanish. Colombian second division team Llaneros performs in this stadium.
Earlier, Cape Verde became the first country to name a stadium after a former Brazilian striker. The Prime Minister of this country, Ulisses Correira Silva, has confirmed that the national stadium, formerly known as the National Stadium of Cape Verde, will be renamed Pelé Stadium.
Three-time Brazilian world champion Pelé died on December 29, 2022 after a long battle with colon cancer.
