Shukov – about the Champions League game against Spartak: “They knew how to play football – that’s a fact. At that time, Muscovites had personalities in the field”

Former CSKA midfielder Dmitri Choukow in an interview with he recalled the match in the Dutch Willem II with “Spartacus” in the Champions League in 1999.

‘Willem II’ met ‘Spartak’ in the 1999/2000 Champions League group stage. In Tilburg, the Muscovites defeated the Dutch with the score 3:1, and the meeting in Moscow ended in a draw – 1:1. Shukov participated in both games.

– As part of Willem, you played the Champions League with Spartak. Recently there has been a discussion about whether the Moscow club were really that strong in the 90s. What are your impressions of these matches against the Reds-Whites?

– They knew how to play football – that’s a fact. At that time, the team had personalities on the pitch. The same Titov, Tikhonov … It is clear that before that Onopko, Ledyakhov, Karpin played there. And this “Spartak” was much stronger than the one we came out against. However, the team was still strong, the team remained the flagship of Russian football.

I remember how we lost 1-3 at home, and I even got a penalty against us. In principle, it was clear that the Muscovites were well played, and some of the guys overtook us in skill. It’s not surprising. If a team plays in European competitions every year, then everything comes with experience. For us it was the first experience in such a big tournament,” Shukov told .

Shukov played for CSKA from 1992 to 1995, after which he moved to the Netherlands and played for local clubs until the end of his career. In Willem II, the Russian spent five years from 1999 to 2004.
