Bulykin believes Ronaldo will be called up to the national team under Martinez, but he’s not guaranteed a spot in the squad

New head coach Portugal Roberto Martinez will call the Al-Nasr striker Cristiano Ronaldo in the national team, but the place in the striker’s main team is not planned, according to the former footballer of the Russian national team Dmitry Bulykin.

On Monday, it was announced that Martinez had been appointed as the Portuguese team’s head coach. The coach said he treated Ronaldo with respect and would discuss the national team’s performance with him.

– I think Ronaldo will be called up anyway. And in training and matches, a decision will already be made whether he “shoots” in the national team or not. But considering he is one of the strongest players in the world, they will definitely respect him and his decisions.

Every coach needs a result, and if a player doesn’t give it, then, of course, he will look for those who can give a result. And a place in Cristiano’s squad is not guaranteed, Bulykin told Gazeta.Ru.

Martinez has coached the Belgian national team since 2016 and left the post after the team failed to progress through the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar. Under the leadership of a Spanish specialist, the Belgians won bronze at the 2018 World Cup.

– It is unlikely that anyone will tell you about the coach or the football player, his development in the new team – time will tell. But he relies on young players. Let’s see how he can motivate each player, because the most important thing in the national team is the atmosphere in the team and the motivation of the players,” Bulykin said.

Ronaldo, 37, signed a contract with Al-Nasr at the end of December.
