Roberto Martinez takes over as Portugal manager

Contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup

The new head coach of the Portuguese national team became Roberto Martinez. This was officially announced by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Martinez signed a contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup. Roberto will replace Fernando Santos as head coach of Portugal.

Earlier it was reported that the 49-year-old has already reached a verbal agreement with the Portuguese Football Federation to start cooperation.

Martinez has been out of a job since December, when he announced his resignation as head coach of the Belgian national team following the team’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup.

Portugal in December terminated the contract with Fernando Santos ahead of schedule after the defeat of the national team from Morocco in the 1/4 finals of the 2022 World Cup.

In the Euro 2024 qualifier, Portugal will play in Group J with Slovakia, Iceland, Luxembourg, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Liechtenstein. Qualification will start in March 2023.
