Srna: It feels like we are fighting not only against Russia, but also against FIFA

The miners demanded to cancel the decision of FIFA to suspend the contracts of legionnaires

Shakhtar Football Director Dario Srna criticized FIFA’s actions against the Donetsk club.

“The whole world is helping Ukraine, but FIFA is not helping its football. It’s their duty and they don’t do anything.”

“What FIFA has done to us is wrong. They will destroy us. We are not asking for other people’s money: we want to protect a club that has played 17 times in the Champions League group stage. And it doesn’t matter if it’s us or another club, it’s the whole country. We want them to defend the Ukrainian league, but instead we feel like we are fighting not only against Russia, but also against FIFA.”

The miners turned to CAS because of FIFA’s decision to allow foreign players to suspend contracts with Ukrainian clubs until the summer of 2023 in connection with the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into the territory of Ukraine.

The miner demanded to cancel the decision of FIFA. The Donetsk club also planned to oblige the International Football Federation to pay damages in the amount of 50 million euros.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Shakhtar’s appeal. A special commission determined that FIFA did not violate the law in its decision regarding the Ukrainian club.

In the first part of the 2022/23 season, only three foreign players played for Shakhtar – defender Lucas Taylor, midfielder Neven Jurasek and forward Lassina Traore. The rest of the legionnaires were sold or rented out.

Shakhtar is in second place in the UPL standings. In February, the Pitmen will play with Rennes in the 1/16 finals of the Europa League.
