Freestyler Abramenko tore his cruciate ligaments. He will miss the 2022/23 season

Alexander does not rule out a potential exit from the sport

Freestyler Alexander Abramenko will miss the current 2022/23 season due to a cruciate ligament tear.

Abramenko will have surgery, after which the recovery period is at least 9 months. In addition, the athlete is not sure that he will continue his sports career after the operation.

“We did an MRI – a rupture of the cruciate ligament of the knee, a sprain of the posterior cross and damage to the bones. That is a standard set of freestylers. This is only an operation, the only way to restore. I have the same thing on my other knee before the 2018 Olympics. It’s nine months of rehab. This season is over for me.”

“I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete at the World Championships. I really wanted to. Again, something prevented me from competing in team competitions.

“We need to do an operation and we will see how the recovery goes. There may be nuances, that is, everything will be fine for ordinary life, but for our sport it can be very disturbing.

“End of a career? I will not say. We’ll see how things develop. Maybe I really want more, or maybe I don’t want to.”

At the 2022 Olympics, Abramenko became the second in the ski acrobatics competition. In the big final, Abramenko scored 116.5 points and lost 12.5 points to China’s Qi Guangpu.

Abramenko became the only Ukrainian athlete who managed to win medals at two different Winter Olympics. In 2018, Alexander became the champion of the PyeongChang Games.
