Arsenal, Chelsea and other representatives of the “big six” spoke out in favor of the most severe punishment of the reigning champions
A number of clubs English Premier League insist on the exclusion of Manchester City from the elite division if the Citizens are found guilty of violating the rules of financial fair play.
The proposal for a potential exclusion of the defending champions was supported by Arsenal, Chelsea and other Big Six clubs. Representatives of the teams believe that retroactive title deprivation will cause confusion, and the monetary penalty in itself will not affect violators.
Earlier, the Premier League accused Manchester city of numerous violations of the rules of financial fair play. Violations in financial performance, income and wages were in every season from 2009/10 to 2017/18. After years of investigation, the APL referred the matter to an independent commission.
The townspeople threw aside allegations of violations and agreed to transfer the investigation to an independent commission. The club said it was ready to provide evidence of its innocence.
The Premier League has yet to announce sanctions. Among the options for punishment – both the deprivation of points in the current draw, and exclusion from the division.
Manchester City are second in the Premier League, five points behind Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko’s Arsenal. In the next match, the Citizens will host Aston Villa on 12 February.
