Ukrainian club risks losing a large amount of capital
CEO of Shakhtar Sergey Palkin said that the Donetsk club continues to suffer serious losses in connection with the decision of FIFA to suspend the contracts of legionnaires.
“If the situation remains unchanged, our losses could rise to at least 70 million euros – 70% of our players will leave for free.”
“We invested in them, we bought them [игроков] before the war. We are losing investments and at the same time we are paying the debts of the clubs that sold us these players. FIFA is not going to meet.”
The miners have turned to an international authority over FIFA’s decision to allow foreign players to suspend contracts with Ukrainian clubs until the summer of 2023 in connection with the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine. The miner demanded to cancel the decision of FIFA. The Donetsk club also planned to oblige the International Football Federation to pay damages in the amount of 50 million euros.
CAS dismissed the appeal and determined that FIFA did not violate the law in its decision regarding the Ukrainian club. The miner is appealing against the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the Federal Court of Switzerland and the European Commission.
In the first part of the 2022/23 season, only three foreign players played for Shakhtar – defender Lucas Taylor, midfielder Neven Jurasek and forward Lassina Traore. The rest of the legionnaires were sold or rented out.
Shakhtar is in second place in the UPL standings. In February, the Pitmen will play with Rennes in the 1/16 finals of the Europa League.
