Brighton was ready to pay 16+4 million euros for the Shakhtar defender
Shakhtar director of football Dario Srna told why transfer of defender Nikolay Matvienko to Brighton has not been completed.
“According to Matvienko, in the 20th of January it was clear that Brighton would no longer raise the price.”
“Matvienko is a very important player for Shakhtar and the Ukrainian national team, a very experienced player, there are few such players in Europe. Therefore, if any club wants to acquire Matvienko, then it will be the same story as with Mikhail Mudrik.”
“I estimate it at 30 million. It’s my personal opinion”.
Recall that Brighton was ready to pay 16 million euros for Matvienko. Brighton also offered €4 million in bonus payments. The miners wanted to get at least 30 million euros for the Ukrainian. In addition to Brighton, Matvienko was interested in three more Premier League clubs – Brentford, Leicester and West Ham.
This season, Matvienko has played 19 matches for Shakhtar. His agreement with the Donetsk club runs until the summer of 2025.
Brighton are sixth in the Premier League with 31 points. Shakhtar is in second position in the UPL and will play in the playoffs of the Europa League in February.
