UEFA publish independent expert report on unrest at 2022 Champions League final in Paris

Union of European Football Associations (UEFA ) published on its website a report prepared by a group of independent experts led by Dr Brandao Rodrigues, who investigated incidents during the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.

The final between Real Madrid and English Liverpool took place on May 28, 2022 in the French capital and ended with the victory of the Spanish team with the score of 1-0. The match started 36 minutes late due to queues in front of the arena and problems with the organization of the match. As a result, riots broke out, after which the police used tear gas against the supporters. On May 30, 2022, UEFA announced an independent review, the terms of reference of which were published on June 3, 2022. The fee for organizing and reporting on the results of the audit amounts to 617,490 euros.

— The report contains a number of important lessons on how the organization of the final could be improved. The report also contains a number of valuable recommendations to ensure a better fan experience and safety at future events.

UEFA is currently analyzing the findings of the report and comparing them with its own analysis of the organization of the event and the events that took place there. At the same time, UEFA is reviewing the Commission’s recommendations to make the appropriate changes and measures to ensure the highest level of fan safety at future finals, UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA also said it would separately announce a special program for the reimbursement of funds spent by supporters.
