“Barcelona” faces heavy penalties for paying former referee technical committee vice-president José María Enríquez Negreira several years ago when Josep Bartomeu was club president, according to Forbes.
According to Spanish media, the Catalan club paid €1.4 million to Negreira’s company from 2016 to 2018. Negreira received over €532,000 in 2016, over €541,000 in 2017 and over €318,000. € in 2018. Negreira held a position with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) from 1994 to 2018.
Testifying before the prosecutor’s office, Negreira and his son denied that Barcelona ever received referee preference. They claimed that the money was paid to consult Negreira, however, he could not provide any documents proving that he provided such services to the club.
Barcelona admitted in a statement that they ‘used the services of an external technical consultant who provided technical reports in video format’.
– In addition, the relationship with the service provider has been expanded with technical reports related to the work of professional referees to complement the information required by coaching staff, which is common practice in professional football clubs. Currently, this type of subcontracting service is provided by a professional from the football department. Barcelona regret that this information has come at a time when the team has reached its best form of the season,” the statement read.
The material says that if the club’s guilt is proven, they risk points being dropped or transferred to a lower division.
Barcelona lead the Spanish La Liga, 11 points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, who are one game behind.
