A sharp speech by the CEO of Donetsk Shakhtar to FIFA
CEO of Shakhtar Sergey Palkin said that the Donetsk club will continue the dispute with FIFA about the federation’s decision to suspend contracts with legionnaires due to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
“Our position is that we consider ourselves right in this situation. FIFA made its decision without consultation and evaluation by Ukrainian clubs. Their decision leads Ukrainian football to bankruptcy.”
“FIFA does not support us. They are trying to prove that no one can control them. FIFA puts itself above the law, but Shakhtar must change that. Not only for myself – for example, I don’t know what the future of our club is – but for all the clubs in the world.
“If FIFA does not lift its rule, we will have even bigger losses. We want to achieve justice, we want to prove that we are all one big family. We want to fight and prove that FIFA’s decision is the biggest mistake.”
The miners have turned to an international authority over FIFA’s decision to allow foreign players to suspend contracts with Ukrainian clubs until the summer of 2023 in connection with the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine.
The miner demanded to cancel the decision of FIFA. The Donetsk club also planned to oblige the International Football Federation to pay damages in the amount of 50 million euros.
CAS dismissed the appeal and determined that FIFA did not violate the law in its decision regarding the Ukrainian club. The miner is appealing against the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the Federal Court of Switzerland and the European Commission.
In the first part of the 2022/23 season, only three foreign players played for Shakhtar – defender Lucas Taylor, midfielder Neven Jurasek and forward Lassina Traore. The rest of the legionnaires were sold or rented out.
Shakhtar is in second place in the UPL standings. This month, the Pitmen will play with Rennes in the 1/16 finals of the Europa League.
