In 2025, the first edition of the renewed tournament will take place. In total there will be 32 teams, in a format that will reproduce the planetary appointment of the selections.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced his new big project: the renewed Club World Cup. The Swiss, who has led football’s planetary entity since 2016, is determined to overturn the event that brought together the champions of each confederation and has already made it clear that a great revolution will come by 2025.
The first thing is that the tournament will stop being between seven teams and will be expanded to 32, in a format very similar to the World Cups that took place in the last century. In addition, it will no longer be every year, but will take place every four, always one before the meeting between countries.
And with more teams, there will also be more places. FIFA has determined that the allocation of places will be as follows: Asia will have four places, like Africa and Concacaf. Conmebol, for its part, obtained six places, the half that UEFA will have for European clubs. Finally Oceania will receive one and the last will be in the hands of those responsible for organizing the tournament.
In the case of Conmebol, what is most expected is that they will be delivered against the performances of the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana, although nothing is confirmed. Even the world club ranking could be a parameter.
Thus, the Club World Cup will change format after 18 years of existence. Of course, there is still an edition to be disputed with the current modality. The Zurich-based agency has announced that it will take place between December 12 and 22, 2023 in Saudi Arabia . There will be the new champion of the Copa Libertadores and the Champions League.
So everything will change and it will be played between 32 powers around the world. Group stage, eighths, quarters, halves and final. A way to replicate the country format that will end in the United States in 2026.
