Former football player and ex-scout for Spanish “Barcelona” Eric Abidal told Sport24 he was proud of Russian footballers such as Andrei Arshavin who has proven himself in European football, despite the difficult climate in Russia and the country’s defensive style of football.
– Which of the Russians would you call the best you have ever played against?
– I wouldn’t mention individual players, but I would say about all Russian teams as a whole. When I was a player, Russian football was completely different. There were a lot of talented footballers, but everything was mixed up.
I am happy and proud of players like Arshavin, who despite the difficult climate in Russia, the defensive style of Russian teams, have proven themselves in European football.
Now in Russia there are many young players who will be able to enter big clubs in the future, which will benefit their country and the national team. However, first and foremost, getting into European football is important for Russian players themselves.
