Former Giro champion Dumoulin announces retirement

The Dutchman will reach the end of the 2022 season

Jumbo-Visma team cyclist Tom Dumoulin announced his retirement at the end of the 2022 season.

The 31-year-old Dutchman lamented that his body was having a hard time performing at the highest level.

“It was not an easy journey in which my body felt and still feels tired. As soon as the loads in training or racing get higher, I suffer from malaise, pain and injury instead of strengthening, ”Dumoulin wrote.

“We will develop a plan with the team to squeeze out as much as possible in recent months. I’m especially looking forward to the World Championships in Australia where I hope to give my best time in the trial for the last time.”

During his career, Dumoulin won the overall standings of the Giro d’Italia in 2017 and became the 2017 world champion in the trial.

The Dutchman also has three wins at the stages of the Tour de France, four at the Giro and two at the Vuelta 2015.

In January last year, Dumoulin announced a pause in his professional career, after which he returned to the peloton in May.

In May, the ex-champion of all three Grand Tours Vincenzo Nibali announced the end of his career as a cyclist.
