The Pitmen will play with Feyenoord in the 1/8 finals of the Europa League
CEO Miner Sergei Palkin commented on the results of the draw for the 1/8 finals Europa League.
“Anyway, it’s better than the London Arsenal. Because at first they announced to us that it was Arsenal that would be the opponent, and my heart skipped a beat, and then they said that this was a mistake. And Rotterdam is a landmark city for us: the new coaching staff of Igor Jovicevich was introduced there in the summer, so this event is significant for the coaches and the club.”
“Although, if we analyze the last six months since we started playing in the Ukrainian championship and the Champions League group, it seems to me that it makes no difference for our club with whom to play. After all, such a club DNA has been developed that allows you to beat any opponent, or at least look decent, because you can even lose with dignity.
“The fight with Rennes showed that we come out of the most difficult situations with our heads held high. The most important thing is that we demonstrate character and thirst for victory. It is important. And Feyenoord is a very good club, we know it well, we played with it. They help us a lot in charitable activities, we cooperate well with them. Therefore, it will be very nice to come to Rotterdam again and meet our good old friends.”
“We always have chances, even in the Champions League. Seriously, today, in conditions of war, the planning horizon is a maximum of one or two weeks. And in the club the situation is the same in terms of planning and sports results. So we go from match to match.”
“And I hope that we will get better every day, because new guys have come in who have refreshed the team. Eg, [в ответном матче с Ренном] Kevin came out, and spent those minutes that he was on the field gorgeous: he scored a goal that brought us to the next stage. This indicates that our newcomers are players with a good level and character. And I believe that they will help more and more from game to game.”
Shakhtar defeated Rennes on aggregate in the 1/16 finals of the Europa League. The main and extra time of the fight in France ended in victory for the hosts, and the Pitmen managed to snatch a ticket to the next round in the penalty shootout (1:2, 5:4 on penalties).
Igor Jovićević’s team will play with Feyenoord in the 1/8 finals of the Europa League. The first match will be at home for the Pitmen and will take place in Warsaw on March 9th. The second leg will take place on March 16 in the Netherlands.
