Real Madrid defender David Alaba attempted to explain to club supporters his decision to vote for Lionel Messi when determining the best football player of the year according to FIFA.
Previously, the captain of the Austrian national team had been the subject of racist insults because of his choice. The list of contenders for the prize also included Alaba’s teammate, striker Karim Benzema .
– I’m not the only one to decide. The entire Austrian team votes for this award. All Team Council members can vote, and here’s how it was decided. I have said many times that for me Benzema is the best striker in the world, and he will remain so,” the footballer wrote on social media.
Messi has been voted Footballer of the Year. Paris Saint-Germain’s French striker Kylian Mbappé finished second, while Benzema completed the top three.
The Best FIFA Football Awards 2022 ceremony was broadcast live by the channel.
