This Thursday, the Federation confirmed the Argentinian Néstor Lorenzo as new coach, after the termination of the contract of the former coach of the Reds. He knows coffee football well since he was the squire of the current Venezuelan coach, a qualifier for two World Cups: Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018.
The Chilean team is not the only one in the phase of rearmament after being dropped from the Qatar 2022 World Cup (pending administrative proceedings, before FIFA’s decision on the complaint against Byron Castillo). It also happens in Colombia. Not taking part in the World Cup was a blow for a cast that boasts an exceptional generation of players. The bet on Reinaldo Rueda, who left La Roja to return to his country, failed. The man from Cali ended up terminating his contract with the Federation. This Thursday, the FCF formalized its new coach.
It’s about Argentinian Nestor Lorenzo who knows a lot about coffee football, because he was José Pekerman’s technical assistant when he was in charge of the selected team. He was a footballer who came from the youth teams of Argentinos Juniors and who not only played in Transandean football, but also in Italy (Bari) and England (Swindon Town). His career ended in 1998, in Quilmes.
His bond with Pekerman began in the Argentina national team, being the assistant of the Albiceleste Sub 20 between 2000 and 2002. Then they returned to work together in the senior team, en route to the 2006 World Cup in Germany . This technical staff arrived in Colombia in 2012 and led the national team to two World Cups: Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018.
Lorenzo went “independent” and took on the challenge of being head coach last year, at Melgar in Peru. He has had good results, both locally and continentally. Indeed, the Arequipa team qualified for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana by winning their group, leaving out Racing Club de Avellaneda.
Argentinian coaches are the ones who dominate among South American teams. Seven of Conmebol’s 10 casts have DTs on the other side of the mountain range. In addition to Lorenzo, there is Lionel Scaloni (Argentina), Eduardo Berizzo (Chile), Gustavo Alfaro (Ecuador), Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Paraguay), Ricardo Gareca (Peru) and José Pekerman himself (Venezuela).
