England continue their intense preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, hosting the first leg of this UEFA Nations League cycle against Hungary on Saturday night at the Puskas Arena.

Unlike them, the hosts won’t be on the big stage and non-football controversy continues to plague the players ahead of this League A Group 3 game.

Previously, these sides played in 2022 World Cup qualifying and a successful night for England in the first leg in Hungary was overshadowed by a flood of racist slurs that poured from the stands. It was therefore expected that Saturday’s meeting would take place in empty stands. However, since children and their parents or guardians are allowed to attend the match according to UEFA regulations, the Puskas Arena can accommodate up to 30,000 spectators at the opening of the Nations League.

In the “group of death” at Euro 2020, Hungary held on and almost reached the playoffs, even though the rivals were Portugal, France and Germany. The Hungarians lost to the Portuguese 0:3, but conceded all the goals in the last 6 minutes. Then there was a draw with France and in the last round against Germany, Hungary led 2:1 and this score took the team to the playoffs, but the Germans leveled the score in the 84th minute and the Hungarians were left behind. And in the Nations League this season, most likely, there will be the same story, again the “group of death” and rivals against England, Italy and Germany. Hungary can give local fights, but they have a minimal chance even for third place.

Hungary host England in Budapest having won just two of their last six home matches in all competitions, and even then those successes were against European dwarfs San Marino and Andorra, so their next Nations League campaign is unlikely to be a revelation after two successive promotions from the lower C league.

England may have mixed feelings as they aim for Nations League glory after losing the Euro final, but the Three Lions must not give up the title 12 months after losing to Italy.

Gareth Southgate will remain in the role until at least 2024 after signing a new contract in November after England qualified for the 2022 World Cup without losing 10 qualifiers and finishing first in Group I.

Five goals were scored and only one conceded as England secured a pair of friendly wins over Switzerland and the Ivory Coast in March, and Southgate took the opportunity to experiment with his side during those times.

The less said about England’s chances of winning the Nations League the better, as the Three Lions managed to finish third in League A Group 2 last season, and three days after a grueling trip in Budapest, they will face Germany.

There are no particular surprises in the composition of the Hungarian national team for the June matches. Winger Kevin Varga is the only player from the March squad to be knocked out, but there are also a quartet of newcomers hoping to impress, including 17-year-old striker Zalan Vancha.

In Rossi’s usual 3-4-2-1 formation, Ronald Schallai and Dominik Soboslai will support Adam Szalai as always, while Peter Gulaci is expected to return to his place at the gate.

Meanwhile, England have already taken a hit, with Arsenal centre-back Ben White injured.

Southgate are also due to test the fitness of Trent Alexander-Arnold after his poor showing in the Champions League, while Jordan Henderson has been left out along with Eric Dier, Tyrone Mings. Additionally, Emil Smith-Roe will play for the U21 team. Marc Guehee will also miss this match, as well as Phil Foden, who tested positive for COVID. Raheem Sterling is also involved after a week of training interrupted by illness.
