Professional football competitions in Ukraine are expected to resume in August, said Andriy Pavelko, head of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF).
The Ukrainian football championship was suspended in February due to the introduction of martial law in the country. In April, the early end of the season was announced. At the time of the stoppage of the championship, Shakhtar Donetsk was at the top of the standings.
– I spoke with President Volodymyr Zelensky about the importance for football of distracting (people from what is happening). We talked about the great influence of football which can help people think about the future. It’s a future where players can once again return to the pitch in Ukraine to give (people) sporting moments of joy. Therefore, the president and I have decided that we will resume the Ukrainian championship in August,” Pavelko said quoting the Associated Press.
According to him, competitions will be held at all levels – we are talking about the Premier League, the first and second divisions, the women’s championship. At the same time, it is not yet known in which regions of Ukraine the matches will be played.
“We will discuss with our military and the government how to organize it safely,” the UAF chief added.
