Tajikistan Football Federation vice-president Alisher Urunov told that the offer to participate Russian team in the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) tournament was hosted by the Russian Football Union (RFU) in November.
Earlier on Monday, Tajikistan Football Federation press secretary Faridun Saliev told that the Russian national football team will participate in the inaugural CAFA championship, which will be held from June 9 to 21. The RFU communication service told that the possibility and conditions of the Russian national team’s participation in this tournament are currently being discussed.
– Of course, this tournament will become more interesting with the participation of Russians. The level and interest in this tournament will only increase, it is not even discussed. This will give a special status to the tournament. We really hope that this tournament will become traditional.
“Negotiations on Russian participation started in November?”
– Not so much negotiations as a proposal from the CFAA to the leadership of the RFU. This proposal was announced on the eve of a friendly match between the national teams of Russia and Tajikistan (the match took place on November 17 – approx.). RFU colleagues took it very positively, which made us happy,” Urunov told .
At the end of December, the RFU’s executive committee raised the question of the organization’s possible transition to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Later, together with UEFA, it was decided to create a working group, the purpose of which is to draw up a roadmap for the rapid return of Russian teams to international tournaments.
