FIFA has officially changed the format of the 2026 World Cup

48 teams will take part in the World Cup, divided into 12 quartets

FIFA officially presented the approved format for holding World Cup 2026.

48 teams will take part in the tournament, which will be divided into 12 groups of four teams. The two best teams from each group will advance to the playoffs, as well as the best 8 teams that will take third place in the quartets.

In addition, FIFA has announced the final date for the final of the world championship. The decisive match for the main trophy of the 2026 World Cup will take place on July 19, 2026.

Earlier, the organizers planned to hold the first stage of the 2026 World Cup, dividing 48 teams into 16 groups of three teams. However, the tense and spectacular matches of the third round of the 2022 World Cup group stage in Qatar forced FIFA to rethink the situation.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in three countries at once – the USA, Canada and Mexico. It was previously announced that the world championship will begin on June 11, 2026.
