The new stadium of Cagliari will be named “Gigi Riva” after the legend of the Rossoblu and symbol of the land of Sardinia.
Born in Leggiuno, Gigi Riva later became a Sardinian through adoption, given that he remained in Rossoblo between 1963 and 1977, winning the Scudetto in the 1969-70 season. Wearing the four mori jacket, he played 315 games, scoring 164 goals; moreover, despite the years that have passed, he remains Italy’s all-time record holder with a frightening average goal both then and now: 35 goals in 42 games played. In the colors of Azzurri, he won the 1968 European Championship and also finished second at the World Championship of the 70s in Mexico.
He will join the circle of players to whom the stadium of the city was dedicated, which made them great, but in his case, to the detriment of the general Italian habit, all this was set in life. Other examples are the stadium in Naples dedicated to Diego Armando Maradona (after his death in 2020), the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milan and the stadium in Genoa dedicated to the memory of the legendary Luigi Ferraris. In tennis, a similar case is associated with Nicola Pietrangeli, to whom the former center court of Foro Italico near Rome was dedicated.
