The IFAB has made changes to the rules of football, which will come into force from the 2023/24 season

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which has the power to change the rules of football, has published rule changes which are expected to come into effect in the 2023/24 season.

One of the changes affected the “Players” item. Under the new rules, if an extra player or team official who was on the pitch when a goal was scored did not interfere with play, the referee should not disallow the goal. In the event that an outsider interferes with the game, the game is resumed with a free kick from the position of an additional person.

In the 2022 World Cup Final, Argentina striker Lionel Messi scored the third goal in extra time as two additional Argentina players were on the pitch, who jumped out of the technical area, but did not interfered with the episode.

Also in the added time clause, goal celebrations have been added to a separate category of occasions for which the referee can add time.
