Team Canada refused to organize a friendly match with the team Panama due to contract disputes between the players and the Canadian Football Association (Canada Soccer).
A meeting scheduled for Sunday in Vancouver was canceled less than two hours before departure.
Canadian soccer players have said they want more transparency from Canada Soccer, changes in the organization’s leadership and compensation for World Cup qualification, which includes 40% of prize money and a “complete friends and family package” at the tournament in Qatar.
“It’s time to speak up for the future of football in Canada. We want to work with Canada Soccer, but our relationship has become strained over the years. And now the organization is disrespecting our team and compromising our efforts to raise the standards and effectively grow the game in Canada. We need the terms of the agreement disclosed and amended,” the players said in a statement carried by CTV News.
Canada Soccer president Nick Bontis said the offer presented by the players was not financially viable.
“My job as President is to be responsible for the continued health of this organization, not just for the past 120 years that we have lived, but for the next 100 years that we will live. I cannot accept this offer, which will put our organization in a financially untenable position,” Bontis said.
Canada has not participated in World Cups since 1986. The 2022 World Cup will take place from November 21 to December 18.
