UEFA decides to reward the Scottish coach Alex Ferguson a medal in reference to his victory in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983 when he was in charge of Aberdeen.
On May 11, 1983, Aberdeen beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the tournament final. Afterwards, only 11 players from the Scottish team’s starting line-up and five substitutes received medals for the victory.
“It is a great honor for me to receive this medal. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen, – quotes the words of Ferguson BBC.
Several former club employees will also receive medals, including former club manager Ian Donald.
Ferguson led Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. Under his leadership, the team became 13 times champion of England.
