Wales striker and captain Gareth Bale called victory over the team Ukraine (1-0) in the final play-off to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the biggest result in Welsh football history, and admitted he barely trained before the game.
“This is the best result in the history of Welsh football. We are all delighted. Matches like this are what we dream of and what we come to football for. This result is for our wonderful fans. I cannot describe my feelings.
I haven’t done much for the past few weeks due to a back spasm. I played the best I could. I gave everything I had on the pitch,” Bale said as quoted by Sky Sports.
The Wales-Ukraine match was held in Cardiff. In the 35th minute, Bale completed a pass into the penalty area from a set piece, while Andriy Yarmolenko played unsuccessfully with his head, sending the ball into his own net.
Wales will play the final tournament of the 2022 World Cup in Group B in the same quartet with England, Iran and the United States. The FIFA World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.
