The new head coach of the Ukrainian national team has previously worked with the majority of basketball players from the blue-and-yellow
New head coach national team of Ukraine basketball Vitaly Stepanovsky shared his impressions of his appointment. The coach also revealed the basic principles of team formation.
“Of course, this is an important step in my career, a huge responsibility and honor. There is a lot of attention to the game of the Ukrainian national team, everyone will follow how we will look. So, of course, I have a very important experience ahead of me.”
“First of all, there are a lot of people in the national team who have passed the Chemist system. These are the guys I worked with on the student team. I also worked with other players who will be in the national team when I was in the coaching staff of Ainars Bagatskis.”
“I see that we can add young players: call on Maxim Shulga, with whom I worked in the youth team. He performed very well, had a good season in Utah State – they got into March Madness. He had a good season and I know what he can do. Sasha Kovlyar also had a good season in Kalev, Estonia. This is a player with whom I have worked a lot, and now he can also qualify for the first team squad.
“Unfortunately, Denis Lukashov was injured and I wish him a speedy recovery. So let’s add young players, we have guys who were in the cage at the last EuroBasket and we will move in this direction.
“Ainars has already started the generational change, in particular during the final game window when Kovlyar made his debut. I think we should keep a close eye on the youth and think about who we can add to the squad. I think that this will only be a big plus for the team.”
Stepanovsky headed the Ukrainian national team, replacing Ainars Bagatskis. The new mentor was part of the coaching staff of the Latvian specialist in the selection for EuroBasket 2021 and the World Cup 2023.
Head coach of the Ukrainian national team Ainars Bagatskis left his post after qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. Under his leadership, the blue-and-yellows reached the 1/8 finals of EuroBasket 2022. In the selection for the 2023 World Cup, the Ukrainian team reached the second stage, but failed to qualify for the main tournament.
