Vasily Mikhailov won the gold medal in Croatian Zagreb and interrupted the unsuccessful streak of the national team.

Vasily Mikhailov won a gold medal at the 2023 European Wrestling Championships, taking place in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Ukrainian freestyle wrestler defeated all his rivals in the weight category up to 79 kg. In the decisive match, Mikhailov fought against the reigning European champion Georgis Kugiumtsidis from Greece.

The 27-year-old Ukrainian lost the first test score, but in the first half of the meeting he was in the lead. In the second part of the match, Vasily increased his advantage to two points and kept it until the end (3:1).

For Mikhailov, this championship is the first in his career. Also, the athlete’s victory was the first for the men’s freestyle team of Ukraine in the last 10 years at the European championship.

The last time the Ukrainians succeeded was in 2013, when wrestler Pavel Oleinik became the champion in the weight category up to 96 kg.
