Vernydub about Petrakov: I don’t think that these statements about “sport outside politics” are his words

Vernydub came to the defense of Petrakov

Mentor Kryvbas Yuri Vernidub spoke about the ex-coach of the Ukrainian national football team Alexandra Petrakov, who currently leads the Armenian national team.

“Petrakov was not the worst coach in the national team. He pulled out to the maximum, he was a little unlucky with these games that decided everything.

“The decision to lead Armenia? I don’t want to talk about it, it’s his life. The only thing I didn’t understand. Maybe the media gave it a little wrong, but knowing Petrakov as a decent person, I don’t think that these statements about sports outside of politics are his words. I know him a little differently.”

“If you’ve already gone to work [в сборную Армению], then you cannot cover the best player of the national team, who, although he plays in Russia, and take another. They won’t understand him there.”

“It is his choice, let him think about it. For me, he has always been a man, and remains so. A normal partner with whom I communicate and always communicated.

Petrakov became president of Armenia in January. Since November 2021, the coach has been at the head of the Ukrainian national team. Under his leadership, Ukraine took second place in Group 1 of the League of Nations and remained in Division B, and also did not make it to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In June 2019, Petrakov led the Ukraine U-20 team to a historic victory at the World Championships in Poland. For his work, the coach was awarded an honorary title from the President of Ukraine.

Armenia in the first official match under the leadership of Petrakov lost to Turkey (1:2). Also, the team of the Ukrainian coach played a draw (2:2) in a sparring match with Cyprus.

The coach has already managed to mark a number of controversial actions. Petrakov said that “football should not be politicized,” and also had a fight with an Armenian journalist at a press conference.
