Vernidub: We took Lunin to promote and sell. And the sooner the better

Lunin moved to Real Madrid for nine million euros, excluding bonus payments

Mentor Kryvbas Yuriy Vernidub told the details of the transition of the goalkeeper Andrey Lunin from Zorya to Real Madrid in the summer of 2018. The coach believes that the Ukrainian keeper should appear on the football field more often.

“Our task was to put Lunin [в старт]. We took it to promote and sell. And the faster the better. A year later, he added that he played very well in the Europa League and was sold to Real Madrid for good money. Although this is not only our merit, but also the merit of the Dnieper, his father, Metalist, children’s coaches, where he started. And the path that was chosen in relation to him was very correct.

“A few games I did a little replacement so that he would move away, but he has such a character, such charisma that he doesn’t give a damn. He makes mistakes, but he doesn’t worry about it. There is a goalkeeper who will make a mistake and you definitely need to give him a rest, because he has something in his head. And Lunin showed himself well.

“God forbid that he plays on. It’s bad that he doesn’t play much at Real Madrid now. Now he is at such an age that he needs to play, and he sits. This is bad”.

Real Madrid acquired goalkeeper Zorya and the Ukrainian national team Andriy Lunin on June 22, 2018 for 9 million euros. Bonuses were also included in the deal – 3.5 million euros. The player signed a six-year contract with the Madrid club.

Andrey Lunin started his career in Dnipro, and in the summer of 2017 he moved to Zorya, for which he played 36 matches (10 – “to zero”), after which he left for Real. While in Madrid, the Ukrainian rented out several times (Leganes, Valladolid, Oviedo).
