Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee “Spartacus” Oleg Romantsev believes that the participants of the retro Pobeda match in Volgograd would not have weakened the current rosters of WORLD RPL teams.
The Pobeda retro match will take place on May 1, 2023 at the Volgograd Arena World Cup stadium and will start at 8:00 p.m. Moscow time. Footballers re-enact the legendary match between Dynamo Stalingrad and Spartak Moscow in 1943. Russian football stars will play a match in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad.
– What do you expect from the retro match on May 1 in Volgograd, in which you will be the head coach of the veteran team Spartak?
– First of all, I expect as many supporters as possible at the stadium. To be honest, I missed them a lot. I missed the hum of the bleachers. Take a tape recorder with you and record! I spent my whole life next to the fans. They have always been our twelfth player. And these are not just big words. In the most difficult game situations, when it seemed that there were neither forces nor emotions, they charged the team with such powerful energy that these forces and emotions again appeared from somewhere. And there are many examples of this. And I always look forward to the communication of such matches. Warm and human communication. After all, where else can we meet and talk if not at football? Last year, in St. Petersburg and Moscow, there were two wonderful matches between Spartak and Zenit veterans. All participants in these meetings can confirm that they experienced strong positive emotions.
– What is the expected composition of the Reds-Whites in Volgograd?
– The backbone will be guys from our golden generation of the 90s and early 00s. My opinion: Most of them wouldn’t waste time in Russian Premier League teams yet.
– In 1983, as captain of Spartak, you went to Volgograd for the 40th anniversary of the memorable match of 1943. What are your memories of this trip?
– I have a picture of this game at home. The whole team is standing on Mamaev Kurgan. Starostin, Beskov, other Spartacists… Then many veterans of the Great Patriotic War were still alive. All in orders and medals. Great people who have experienced things that others never dreamed of. Just being with them was a great joy and honor. A low salute to them, – Romantsev is quoted by the press service of Spartak.
