Spanish La Liga president Javier Tebas has called for a reduction in the number of Champions League places for Europe’s top four leagues.
Clubs from the top leagues of England, Spain, Italy and Germany each receive four places in Europe’s most prestigious club tournament.
“In 2024 there will be a new format for the Champions League, but we should start working on another type of model, a model that looks more to the origins of the European National Champions Tournament, which brings together champions from all of Europe. I represent La Liga, but the fourth Spanish club is not the Champions League, which further widens the economic gap between teams from the same country.
Clubs that play in European competition earn so much that there is a very big gap with other clubs in their own country. And it was wrong that in 2016 it was decided to give more places in the Champions League to clubs from the top leagues. I myself was against four tours for Spain. Along with four Champions League clubs from the English Premier League, German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A due to weaker teams in the league, Sport.es cite Tebas.
