‘It’s a smokescreen to hide the club’s dire financial situation’ – former Barcelona board member on Messi’s possible return

Jaume Llopis, former member of the management board “Barcelona” criticized the Catalans’ current president, Joan Laporto, and was skeptical about the expected return Lionel Messi at the club.

“Laporta promised the most important rights. He will have a €4 billion debt, it’s something that can’t be repaid, Llopis said in an interview with Radio Marca.

Llopis said the club will reach an “irreversible” point in the 2025/26 season and “become a much smaller club or become a limited company”.

It has also been pointed out that Messi’s return demands are just a ‘smokescreen’ to hide the Catalan club’s ‘dramatic’ financial situation.

Barcelona previously announced that they have reached a deal worth €1.45 billion for the reconstruction of the Camp Nou stadium.
