Rostov coach Victor Onopko told Sport24 about his emotions after the WORLD RPL Round 25 game against Spartak, noting that he couldn’t offend his team.
Rostov head coach Valery Karpin was sent off in the Spartak-Rostov match (1:1) after expressing his dissatisfaction with the work of the match’s chief referee, Kirill Levnikov. Onopko did not hold back his emotions, he was not taken away.
– When you are on the bench, you react differently to all the whistles in the direction of your team and to all the actions on the field made by the referees, the players of the other team and your guys. I am such a person and I don’t want to offend my team. It is my position, which I do not put in truth. Someone may think differently. But I think I have to protect my guys, my team. I’m older, I’m a coach, so it’s my duty to protect. But that protection should be in the legal realm, of course, ha ha.
– In the match, you adhered to an aggressive style. You give the impression of being a very calm person, but on the pitch it’s completely different?
– Yes, that’s correct. On the field I am alone, off the field – the other. I’ve had this since childhood. I don’t even prepare for such an aggressive style, I just go out there, and it’s already in my blood. It doesn’t matter what I play: tennis, football or basketball. I always go out to win. This does not happen on purpose – such a character. If I was hit in the street or in the subway, then I will respond, I will give back. This is how they are raised in the yards.
– Does it happen that after the match you have the impression of having gone too far?
No, I never cross the line. I have never hurt or broken anyone. Yes, they could bump into each other, but then they drank beer together.
Rostov scored 50 points and is second in the standings. On May 6, the team will play against Fakel.
