Monumental bitterness: Boca Juniors confronts Colo Colo with reality

From the good image of the first half, to the discomfort of the end. El Cacique lost 0-2 against the xeneizes, in their second home match for the Copa Libertadores. In a few minutes, between Falcón’s error and Palacios’ red card, the duel degenerated for the albos, whose outstanding task remains to clarify what they generate in attack.

Colo Colo had a double test against Boca Juniors. One from the organizational point of view, due to the serious security problems that Chilean football is experiencing. Another of football, because he received at home one of the greats of the continent and his main stumbling block in Group F of the Copa Libertadores. Out of the blue and gold obstacle brilliantly, the prospects were much rosier for the round of 16. But it didn’t happen like that. Chewing a bitter taste, the Chilean cast lost 0-2, in a duel that went from illusion to despair, with no shortcuts.

El Cacique, whose squad is valued at €22m, has maintained the tactical design that Quinteros has established lately, with three in the back. Fernando De Paul remained in goal, relegating Brayan Cortés, while Carlos Palacios was Damián Pizarro’s attacking duo. Opposite, the xeneizes, whose workforce has a value of 79 million euros, who see the Copa Libertadores as their great object of desire. They haven’t won it since 2007.

The Chilean champion’s first scoring opportunity came after 26 seconds, with a shot from César Fuentes cleared by goalkeeper Sergio Romero. It’s a small sample of the attacking momentum the hosts offered during the first half. Due to the way the opening period was handled, the one-goal advantage in favor of the Argentines was not commensurate with what happened on the pitch. Because Colo Colo made merits to convert.

Damien Pizarro He played a more than acceptable game, thinking it was his first big test in his fledgling career. What needs improvement is the definition, as he usually shoots to where the keeper is. At 9′, the youngsters had a one-on-one with Romero which the goalkeeper won. ‘Chiquito’, formerly an Argentine national team, was the reason Boca went to the profit break. He interrupted each approach of the albos.

The start of the Chileans was very good, but you should never leave a window open for Boca. Or in other words, you shouldn’t give space to your fast underdogs. At 13 minutes, the Peruvian Luis Advíncula opened the scoring with a cross shot from the left. Hook inside and shoot from outside the area. De Paul stretched and did not arrive.

Opening the account left Colo Colo somewhat touched, as the visit did business: finding a goal, he gave up space and control of the ball, waiting for a counterattack. It was the colocolinos who added intensity to the match. For its part, the xeneizes tried to lower the decibels as soon as they could. Maybe that momentum worked against the local, in the sense of not taking the time to better define the rooms. And in the 28th minute, Boca almost made it 2-0, but De Paul held Luis Vázquez one-on-one.

The first half recorded 67% possession for Colo Colo. In this sense, he favors the exterior rather than the creation of interior spaces. At 34′, a strike from Gil finds Romero’s reply which deflects. Was the result unfair? Maybe. With the regime change, the cacique has found more solvency in the fund, but he still fails to regain the firepower he exhibited last year. Well, there aren’t the same players either. And the change is drastic.

Towards the complement, the tonic has not changed. Boca weren’t the least bit bothered by the abandonment of the initiative. Jorge Almirón’s side were getting closer and closer to their zone. The fact is that Colo Colo has not found the precise method to transform these approaches into objectives. It’s a pending case for Quinteros and company.

Within minutes, the game spiraled out of control for the Whites. Between 65′ and 67′, the illusion fell suddenly. The first came Villa 2-0, which defined after a big mistake by Falcon. Pressed by Vázquez, the Uruguayan loses position and the ball is served to the Colombian.

As if that wasn’t enough, then it happened the expulsion of Carlos Palacios, with a direct red card, after a free kick on Barco. The example of the frustration that gnawed at the white players. The former Vasco faded as the game went on and ended in the worst possible way. The home stretch was favorable to the Argentines, with one more player. What is striking is the delay in the changes of Quinteros and he only resorted to young people. Curious.

With the defeat, Colo Colo find themselves with four points and a negative goal difference in the group (-1). That said, this Thursday’s duel between Pereira and Monagas, Colombia, becomes relevant to the aspirations of the Chileans. The national monarch’s next match will take place on May 23 in Venezuela.
