Alex de Souza arrived at Avai at the beginning of the season with the mission of replacing the team in the elite of national football, but he was unsuccessful.

The coach reached 40% success rate and could not resist the unsatisfactory results of the team from Santa Catarina at the beginning of the season. In this way, before the press conference began, it was already possible to know that Alex de Souza would no longer lead Avai in the 2023 season. Júlio Heerdt, president of the club, arrived accompanied by his deputy, Bruno Comicholi, in the press room, and announced that the coach would no longer remain in charge of the team from Santa Catarina. According to the leader, the moment demanded a change.
“Today Alex is not coming to the press conference, there is no interview. We reached a common agreement and ended the work of the professional here in Avai. We are going to work hard to reverse this result and we are looking for a new coach. I want to thank Alex de Souza, PC Oliveira and João Paulo Cavalcanti for the work they did and I wish them success in their new projects“, said the president during the press conference.
Alex was hired by Avai at the beginning of the season and this was the first opportunity he had to command an important team in Brazilian football. Previously, the technician had only worked at the base of São Paulo and achieved good results. However, his campaign was not one of the best in Santa Catarina and he could not resist the pressure.
It is important to point out that Alex did not make it through the quarterfinals of the state championship, when Criciúma got the spot, in addition to having been eliminated in the first phase of the Copa do Brasil, and the person responsible for that was Retrô. What also contributed to their downfall were the three defeats in the first four games of this edition of Série B.
