Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira paid tribute to doctor Gustavo Magliocca, who died last Wednesday; coach thanked CONMEBOL for permission
Last Wednesday, the 3rd, the palm trees entered the field a few hours after announcing the death of Gustavo Magliocca, medical coordinator of the club, at the age of 42. The team won the Barcelona from Guayaquil, in Ecuador, for the third round of the Libertadores group stage. Magliocca had been fighting brain cancer since 2020.
In a press conference after the match, coach Abel Ferreira thanked Conmebol for allowing the club to honor the professional with a minute of silence before the opening whistle. Players even entered the field wearing black armbands. The entity only accepts this type of act in exceptional cases.
“We made a game that demonstrates very well what Dr. Gustavo Magliocca, which is to do the most with the resources we have at the service of Palmeiras. That’s what he did, and that’s what we did, regardless of the outcome.” said Abel Ferreira.

Recently, the board of directors and the professional squad of the club paid tribute to Gustavo, still alive: Palmeiras named the Núcleo de Saúde e Performance with the name of Magliocca. He was responsible for bringing about significant changes in the department.
In February, before the 2-0 victory over Inter de Limeiraalviverde celebrated the doctor’s birthday with all the players profiled for the photo wearing a shirt with the number 42, personalized with the name of Gustavo Magliocca.
